About the St Clair Surf Life Saving Club
Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the National Association representing the nine Districts and seventy one Surf Life Saving Clubs. Nearly 13,000 people are members of SLSNZ.
Surf Life Saving has a cascading membership structure. A member of a Club is automatically a member of that District and SLSNZ. In a broad sense, SLSNZ works directly with the nine Districts and in turn, Districts work with Clubs. A national framework offers direction and protection to its members
Established in 1911, St Clair Surf Life Saving Club were one of the very first surf life saving clubs to patrol in New Zealand. The club has been providing a continuous volunteer service focused on saving lives and preventing injury for St Clair beach users and the wider Dunedin Community over the last 96 years.
St Clair has always been Dunedin's most popular swimming beach and St Clair Surf Life Saving Club have been ever present through our 96 years.
St Clair is a beach which is popular with all types with warm days producing swimmers, walkers, runners, surfers.
Club members patrol our beach on the weekends from late October to early March each year, with additional patrols rostered through the Surf Life Saving professional life guard squad on weekdays over the school holiday time.
On average St Clair Surf Life Saving club members will assist thirty members of the public with various incidents at St Clair Beach and its surrounding enviorns.
The St Clair Surf Life Saving Club is the home of the the mono hulled surf canoe having been designed and constructed by club life member Duke Gilles MBE.
As well as providing a valuable community service, St Clair has also had a constant presence in Surf Sports events.
Currently St Clair Surf Life Saving Club has an active patrol roster of 60 with a total club membership of 300.
Our club is located at St Clair Beach on the northern end of the Esplande offering a prime position amongst an ever growing location.
We also have a winter training base located on Portobello Road immediately before the Vauxhall Yacht Club.
