White Island Race
The 41st annual White Island Race was held yesterday (23 October) in mild 1 meter surf at St Clair.
Featuring a record turnout of 59 paddlers the race was won overall by the double ski combination of James Coombes and Heath Ratten ensuring the fastest time shield will hang proudly in the upstairs lounge for the centenary season.
Dan Peacocke (Mount Maunganui) was the first ski paddler home, followed by Ryan Shanks (Brighton) and Jack Gavin (Midway).
Carla Laughton was the first female ski paddler home, also claiming the St Clair Paddle for first overall on handicap. Nicole Walker and Steph Laughton followed Carla home.
The St Clair Salty Dogs crew of Graeme Newton, Peter Haslemore, Murray Turner and Rob Cunningham were the first canoe crew home winning the Darcy Cristopher trophy.
Sam McCutcheon defended his fastest board paddler time with Hamish McCulloch and Kieran Applegarth next to finish.
Monique Francois was the first female board paddler to finish ahead of Hannah Cullen and Jessie Schneiders.
