The SLSC Patrol Teams Competition was held over the weekend at Taylor's Mistake in Christchurch.
St Clair send a relatively inexperienced team up to this event with no real expectations on where we would be place.
The inexperience was only intensified with injuries to two of our senior members.
However right from the beginning of the event the team showed through an all round quality which was more than a match for the Canterbury clubs.
The Run Swim Run saw the club placed 3rd overall aided by placing from Sam McCutcheon and James Coombes. An atonishing tube rescue from Sam pulled the team up from last into 3rd in a race which an injury to Carla mid race meant he had to complete a double tube tow by himself.
The team looked set to dominate the IRB event until a cruel injury to Sam meant we were unable to complete the race.
After the blow of losing Sam to injury the team drafted in manager Peter Smallfield who showed great maturity in the way he applied his skills. This was further completmented by a great effort by Rhys McAlevey, Scott Fraser and Sophie Robb in the CPR section which saw the team narrowily miss winning that section.
The final two sections featured the theory test which the team found to be quite challenging and the Lifesaving Scernario which the team earned full marks for being complimented on the way the situation was handled and the maturity shown by a team featuring a 15 year old, 3 16 year olds and a couple of older members.
Overall we finished second by 2.5 points to Sumner, points which we would surely have earned had we not struck such cruel luck in the IRB section.
