Dear members,

Latest news from around the St Clair Surf Life Saving Club.

National Ocean Athletes

On Wednesday 25th February 14 juniors and 9 parents headed off to compete at Oceans 15 at Mt Maunganui. The squad trained hard over the Christmas break with Michael Trembath taking sessions 6 days a week. There were lots of groans and quite a few trips down to the “salty “ for squad members who didn’t listen!

  • Under 14: Karamuu Taratoa-Bannister, Seb Prescott, Nathan Martin, Anaia Wiparata.
  • Under 13: Struan Campbell, Ben Hayward, Max Wolf, Grace Blackie, Hannah Matehaere, Annie Kennedy-Aitcheson.
  • Under 12, Olivia Andrew, Charlotte Underwood-Nicol.
  • Under 11, Erika Fairweather, Emma Andrew.

The last week has been a quiet time having dispatched the boards and tent to the Mount via Mainfreight. (Thanks Rob Stout for organising this.) Also thanks to Steve Mowat Building and Construction Ltd. for taking the cages to Mainfreight. Finally there was some great efforts put in for fundraising, and it would be great to support the businesses who sponsored our “Weekender” article.

Southern Region Champs

The annual Southern Region Champs were held at New Brighton beach over the weekend with St Clair sending a 19 strong team. Racing kicked off Saturday morning with the rescues and team events and followed onto the Sunday with the individual events. The team preformed extremely well finishing a very close second to a competitive South Brighton with the points going down to the final taplins. Our under 16 crew of Nathan Wolf, Liam McKillop, Lachie Brandham, Alex Thompson, Ben McMahon, Jody Mowat, Lucy Matehaere, Carina Donegan and Olivia Gold optimised what St Clair clubbies are about by competing in multiple age groups to do what was best for the team while also maintaining there high racing standards. They were backed up by a strong showing from our under 19 and open athletes.

A full list of results can be found on the SLSNZ website and photos of the athletes on the clubs Facebook page.

Huge thanks must go to the Shelly and Darrin McKillop for towing the trailer up, Brent and Andrea Wolf for organising the food and helping with the cooking, Dave Thomson and Christine Donegan for the photos, Brent Matehaere and Cam Burrow for managing and finally all the parents for there support.

Last weekend saw Matt Bradley and Heather Thompsons patrols. Saturday was a busy day with over 200 people observed either on the beach or in the water at 3pm. This weekend Graeame Newton and James Rolfe have their patrols so it would be great to see as many faces around the club as possible. So far this season Thomas Garforth is leading our number of patrol hours with 99.5! Can anyone catch him?

Junior Surf Update

Wednesday night swimming has started again with good numbers consistently turning up. Saturday afternoon club day has also re started, and thanks to the parents who have helped coach and run the BBQ. This is much appreciated.

What’s coming up for the rest of the season is:

  • Saturday 28th February club day, with the proceeds from the BBQ going to “Relay for Life”.
  • Sunday March 1st Weet-Bix kids triathlon with a group doing the lifeguarding at the Mosgiel pool.
  • Sunday March 8th Otago Champs at Warrington.
  • Club junior prize giving, a break up and gear tidy up session. The dates for these are yet to be decided.
