White Island Race - 25th Oct 2011

The 43rd Annual White Island Race was held on Saturday 22 October 2011.

Held in conditions with clear sky's, 1 meter surf with a tricky shorebreak made for interesting racing for the 50 competitors.

Overall the fastest time was acheived by the double ski combination from St Clair of Heath Ratten and Phil Pirie, they were followed by Dan Peacocke and Tom Stillwell from Mount Maunganui in their double ski and Ryan Shanks as the fastest single ski paddler on the day.

The overall winner of handicap was awarded to Carla Laughton who was also the first female ski paddler to finish ahead of Monique Francois.

The Darcy Christopher Trophy for First Canoe to finish was the St Clair Salty Dogs crew ahead of Brighton and the St Clair mono hull crew.

Hamish McCulloch from Brighton was the first board paddler to finish ahead of Sam McCutcheon of St Clair, the first female board paddler to finish was St Clair's Jessie Schneiders.

The overall highlight of the day came from Rhys Applegarth (St Clair) who recorded the fastest ever time for swimming the event beating the 1997 record held by Pierre Tapper.
