Newton Heads to Surfing Champs - 29th Apr 2014

Andrew Newton (Son of Life Member Graeme) formally of Dunedin now based in Tauranga heads away to the Surfing world champs tomorrow (along with his Mount Maunganui club mate Sam Shergold), we caught up with him for an update on the event.

We’ve been selected to represent New Zealand by Surfing NZ to attend the International Surfing Association (ISA) World SUP and paddleboard championships to be held in Nicaragua, South America, from the 3rd-11th May 2014.

Sam will be racing in the 18-20km paddleboard race, Andrew will be racing in the 6km paddleboard race both to be held on lake Nicaragua. Nicaragua is a 3rd world country, with 48% of the population living below the poverty line; with 79.9% of the population living with less than $2 a day, making them one of the poorest countries in the Americas.

As it is a self-funded trip, together we will need to raise $14,000 in order to get ourselves and our boards into Nicaragua, This will also cover accommodation, transport, immunisation jabs, and food. We've been undertaking a number of fundraising activities to raise money such as yoga sessions, cheese rolls, selling wine, and a Horse Racing Derby night.

Check out our page to check out our progress as we travel and race at worlds.
